Pumpkin Beer Month #3: Uinita Punk'n
Welcome back to Pumpkin Beer Month here at Brewin Around. Well, I gotta say, this fall has been a bit of a downer up here in New England: warmer than usual temperatures have made it so the foliage hasn't been as spectacular as it usually is. Still, I have been making the best out of it by trying to get in as much fall activities as I can while it's still with us and no amount of summer like-weather will stop me from coming here and letting you all know what pumpkin beer selections you should go for and today we got one I've seen on the shelves before, but not too sure if I ever did drink this before or not. Maybe that first taste will jog my memory but this one comes from out West from a Utah-based facility known a Uinita Brewery
Brief history: Uinita Brewery was founded in 1993 and is named after the highest mountain range in the state. Considering Utah is not known for having a good following with craft brewing and this brewery churns out so many different varieties, it is declared one of the state's biggest and their Punk'n Ale has been an award winner in the past.
First Impressions: Unfortunately, the label doesn't have as much The Great Pumpkin Ale's was, just a simple giant pumpkin up close with little ones on the side with a guy carrying one on the left side. I'll be honest with you, I never thought the people out West took pumpkin growing as much of a tradition as we do here in New England. Maybe I thought with all those mountains around, they would focus on that kind of lifestyle, but hey, you learn something new everyday
Just found this very handy for some reason
Appearance: Pours to a caramel brown color, kind of foggy on the top while clear down in the bottom. The head is small. Lots of carbonate
Aroma: Smells of cinnamon and vanilla, lacks a true pumpkin smell to it
Taste: Very sweet when it first hits your tongue. Kind of tastes a bit of maple syrup, ginger and cinnamon. Very malty aftertaste. The pumpkin flavor is only slightly there, but that taste just becomes over taken by the other flavors pretty quickly.
Overall: Very disappointed with this batch. It seemed like there was too much of a focus on spice over pumpkin and even with that, those flavors don't really have much of a bite too it. You need that balance of spice and pumpkin there from the get go and it didn't happen. The more I continued to drink it, the more it tasted lagerish to me and that just won't cut it. This brew gets a **/*****
Oh well, amongst many different brands out there for pumpkin brews, there is always gonna be one that won't cut it. Hopefully for next time we'll be able to get back on track because we got more coming your way here for Pumpkin Beer Month. But until then, this is Andrew saying Cheers To You!
