Reviewin The Brews #5: Omnipollo SHPLOING! IPA
Hello folks and welcome to "Reviewin The Brews" where we looks at brews from all states and all countries that make the best! Well after a short break from blogging, I'm glad to be back in the game! I took part in an awesome play called "Dog Sees God" which was probably the most emotionally filled play I have ever been a part of. I will miss it dearly, but in some way it's good to be back to the old grind so to say.
Today I am reviewing a beer that I think invokes the heart of the summer. When any of you go camping, what is the best part of the trip? Well for me, it's being near the campfire roasting marshmallows with some graham crackers and a big piece of chocolate nearby for that delightful treat known as S'mores. Funny enough, the times I've had s'mores this year didn't involve camping at all, it was in my backyard where I live and at a bonfire party at one of the cast members house's. Well this beer takes the taste of S'mores to an interesting level: combine it with mangoes. The moment I saw this on the shelves, I couldn't not do a review so here we are. Before I take a sip, here is some facts about this beer
Background information: To find out the origins of this brew, we have to go to the country of Sweden where Ominipollo is based. The company was founded in 2011 by Henok Fentie and Karl Grandin. It is a gypsy brewer, which means they have no brewing facility of their own so they go to one and pays the brewer to use the space to make their beer. Omnipollo has a working agreement with the Dorchester Brewing Company in Boston to do just that and they pride themselves of making experimental beers as well as creative designs for their bottles and cans. Just taking a look at their designs, I will say there are some pretty random designs. A couple examples include: a melting candle, a bird cage that has been broken through, and a smiley face with a tongue sticking out. It's unlike other beer designs for sure, but like I said, very random. Now it's time to try this bad boy out!
First impressions: I am very confused with the connection between mango s'mores and the can design here. Does mangoes being tropical fruit connect to volcanoes somehow?
Very cool looking colors though
Appearance: pours to a clear gold color, head is small and dissolves very quickly
Aroma: the mangoes are most present, faint hop smell mixes in a bit the more I sniff it
Taste: Starts out hoppy before the citrusy flavor comes in, mostly mangoes and even some lemon in there to really give a sour taste. Kinda feels a bit acidic once it goes down the throat and I can definitely feel it in the tongue. In the aftertaste I do detect a little bit of vanilla but sadly, none of the s'more component are front and center. Oh well
Overall: Man what a letdown this was! I was really excited to see if I actually found a beer that was crazy enough to taste like s'mores and I ended up feeling let down in the end. If they wanted to just call this a Mango IPA, I wouldn't have had an issue with it, but Ominipollo, you let me down with all this talk of s'mores! This gets a */*****
Well that was unfortunate, but it does feel great to be back in reviewing mode. As always feel free to send feedback or requests if you'd like. But until next time, this is Andrew saying Cheers to you!
Oh poo! I bought this beer hoping it was good. Sounded weird though, mango with a s'more? No chocolate too.
ReplyDeleteMy fave beer of the summer has been Lupa Luau, soooo good!
