Goin Through The Breweries (Bite Size)
Hello and welcome to the first edition of "Goin Through the Breweries (Bite Size)" Now you're probably wondering: what makes this bite size? What these editions will be is a shorter description of the brewery and then reviews of the beer that I've tried on a flight. So let's get to it!
Since this is the weekend of my sister's wedding, I figured my future brother-in-law and I should have a little bit of bonding time beforehand, especially since I missed that opportunity at his bachelor party that consisted of an all day fishing trip (I'm a big fishing fan when I have the time to go out there and do it) and both of us are big beer fanatics so we figured going out to a brewery was the next best thing. Now, I have been here once before, but I didn't really have the time to really sit down and enjoy the place because it was a packed house and we spent most of our time outside the building as it was a Kielbasa festival of sorts. This brewery is found in an old mill complex in the heart of Ludlow MA that built their own brewing system from scratch and for the last seven years has produced many award winning brews. The names of their beers are humorous in nature, which makes it stand out amongs all the crafts in Western Mass So let's break out the flights and see what they've got.
From L to R- Rusty Horseshoe, Babymaker, The Common, Eviction Notice
1. Rusty Horseshoe- A sasion created for the cool spring days but light and refreshing enough for drinking throughout the summer.
Color-Pale gold, light body
Head-medium sized
Smell- grainy
Taste- Wheaty at first, but turns to a light citrusy taste near the end, somewhat sweet
2. Babymaker- An Irish porter that brewers here call their favorite. My future brother-in-law agreed (but then again he is pretty bias towards porters)
Color- dark brown)
Head-small
Smell- pretty undetectable
Taste- malty and sweet to start, but you get the toasty flavors near the end. It almost reminds you of taking a bite out of a hickery chip
3. The Common- A Kentucky common ale. I never knew that this kind was a US orginal.
Color- light gold
Head- medium
Smell- faint grain smell
Taste- light and wheaty, was told this is what Budweiser wants it's beer to taste like and I would have to agree. The corn flavor is most present
4. Eviction Notice- The very first Black IPA I have ever tried. Heard many a stories, but never got an opportunity until now. I believe this was named after a court case where it was argued from the owners of the complex that having food trucks and music weren't part of the brewery's lease (a case the brewery ended up winning in the end)
Color- black
Head-large
Smell- Nothing detectable
Taste- nutty (but expected when they use 20 pounds of pecan into this brew) , a hint of citrus when it first enter the palate, chocolate flavors in the aftertaste
All four were great in their own way but my final standing are as followed
1. Eviction Notice
2. The Common
3. The Babymaker
4. Rusty Horseshoe
Thank you for joining me for this special bite size edition of Goin Through the breweries and as Ben Franklin once said "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."Until next time, Cheers to you!
