Reviewin The Brews #2: Dia de Muertos Chocolatl Stout
Hello and welcome to another edition of "Reviewin The Brews" where we take a look at some of the craft brews from across the nation and perhaps even the world. Today is a very special edition because the one we are looking over today comes one country down below us: Mexico and a company called Dia de Muertos, which translates to "Day Of The Dead" where people get together with family and friends to remember people in their lives who have passed on. This is the second beer that my girlfriend gave me for Valentines Day and I'm very surprised she found at that time of the year. So let's dive on in with this brew
First, some background information. When I was looking up the company, something made me a bit uneasy. Right on the bottle it says that this is a product of Cerveza De Los Muertos. It is the third largest craft brewery in Mexico and the bulk of their profits come from contract brewing, which is paying another brewery to make you beer. Well guess which brewery Cerveza De Los Muertos spent many years making beer for? Coors. The worst big brand beer that has ever touched my tongue (and for some reason, it's the only beer I have ever seen my stepdad buy, although he isn't even close to a regular beer drinker) Now supposedly, Coors is not connected with this brewery anymore, but I still deduct point just for the history of that connection, as well as the fact that they also made Ed Hardy branded beer (if you remember the early-mid 2000's, that name might sound familiar to you and just how ridiculous that idea sounds) But now, it's time for the review!!!
First Impressions: First thing to notice is label with a woman doing that tried a true magic trick of pulling a rabbit out of a hat. Both the woman and the rabbit have their faces painted like sugar skulls which, as part of the Day Of The Dead traditions, is used to represent a deceased loved one or even just an expression of themselves. I also see the words "The Necromancer" which for all you Lord Of The Rings/Hobbit fans, is the title of Sauron.
Also wanted to let you guys know for this review, I'll be using a special beer glass my girlfriend also got me. I am not a big sports guy like I used to be, but when I do feel like watching a sport, I go to The Patriots (almost sound like the Dos Equis guy with that statement.) She hates football and especially hates The Patriots, but we went to a Super Bowl viewing party and she tease me a bit when I was cheering and watching the game so her getting this for me just put a smile on my face. To my girlfriend: Thank you for the glass and when we go to a Yankees/Red Sox game, I'll be going just as crazy when the Sox beat your Yankees.
Appearance: Very dark brown in color, the head is large and foamy and dissolves much quicker than the Relic Stout from the last review
Aroma: Very strong chocolate scent, as soon as I opened the bottle up, that aroma just exploded out of the bottle. I got a very small whiff of a coffee scent, but it's just completely overpowered by the chocolate
Taste: Well what it lacks in a coffee aroma it makes up for in the taste. It's very subtle at first but once it goes down, you can really taste it. It's like the chocolate flavor and the coffee flavor was trying to duke it out to see which is more dominate and the coffee one ended up winning.
Overall, I'll give this a **/*****, the Coors connection and that really nauseating chocolate aroma really brought down this score. However, I think the concept is creative and while I've had much better tasting stouts in the past, this taste isn't bad by any stretch.
Want to give a special shout out to the friendly folks at Beerology in Northampton MA. I went in there yesterday and had a great conversation about all things beer and even got to sample a couple of their own brews which were a New England IPA (which I enjoyed as it wasn't too bitter, which is the main reason I tend to stay away from most IPA) and a special apricot ale that was surprisingly good. I just might take a class or two over there as a way to prepare myself for my own home brewing. Make sure to visit their website at beerology.beer!
Thank you for taking the time to read and until next time, this is Andrew saying Cheers To You!
